Kristen Stewart

and Dakota Fanning

The mid 1970s all-girl quintet The Runaways has inspired a new movie.

Some revered the teenaged pop-punk band as feminist trailblazers: rocking electric guitars and raunchy lyrics while most female musicians were singing love songs. Others mocked them as a jailbait marketing gimmick.

For Dakota Fanning, who was 15 at the time of filming, the role of vocalist Cherie Currie allowed her to step into edgy young-adult territory.

For Kristen Stewart, who plays tough girl guitarist Joan Jett, it was a chance to rebel against the defining role of her young career, "Twilight" damsel-in-distress Bella Swan.

Stewart feels that she has found a kindred spirit in Jett.
